about

Black Walls is the solo project of Toronto-based musician Ken Reaume. ‘Communion’ is the second full- length album to be released under this name and it follows the “soft-psyche masterpiece” (cf. Noisey) debut ‘Acedia’ from 2012. Influenced by a period of loss and solitude, it is a quite beautiful album that moves softly and slowly through a reverb-heavy soundworld. One can hear echoes of the artist’s fondness for powerful music from the drone-folk, black metal and post-rock worlds, yet the album treads a careful path, threading together multiple ideas without being beholden to a single genre. ‘Communion’ was mastered by James Plotkin - known for his work with Isis, Sunn 0))) and Oneohtrix Point Never – and this CD release comes with a bonus remix of the track ‘PTSD’ by Aidan Baker from the doom-metal shoegaze band Nadja.

About the album, Reaume says:
“’Communion’ began in the aftermath of my father’s passing and I had a hard time personally. I recorded it mostly at night in my bedroom. Musically, these songs possess a glacial, mountainous, almost monolithic quality that reflected my mood and state of mind.”

Black Walls has played live with kindred spirits such as Low, Six Organs Of Admittance, Stars Of The Lid, Owen Pallett, Bill Orcutt and Chelsea Wolfe. The project will be touring around the release in Autumn 2014.

PRESS:

ROCK-A-ROLLA: "A post-rock record whose elements have drifted apart like continents. Unfathomably deep."
STUART MACONIE'S FREAKIER ZONE (BBC 6MUSIC): "Sublime, somnolent loveliness."
INCENDIARY: "With elements of drone or slowcore, ['Communion'] sounds like the wind blowing through a deserted power plant."
CALEIDOSCOOP: "Breathtaking."
THE LINE OF BEST FIT: “Darkly shrouded majesty, the hushed, creeping intensity evokes a vast yet claustrophobic atmosphere that Boduf Songs devotees will find hauntingly familiar.”
WEIRD CANADA: “Recalling Red House Painters after a three-day chemical bender.”
